In the United States and Canada today it is becoming more common for a woman to buy her partner an engagement ring. These male engagement rings (or man-gagement rings) are growing in popularity.

In some countries (but not typically in the US), both men and women wear engagement rings. They are usually a plain band of a precious metal and may even include diamonds. Modern metals like Tungsten wedding bands are also popular. Often, the engagement ring becomes a wedding ring for the man and others buy both an engagement and a wedding ring.

“Women wear an engagement ring to show that they are taken. They also want everyone to know that their guy is taken. There’s no better way to do that then to have him wear an engagement ring too,” said Wade Peterson, owner of WeddingRingsForever.com who says he has already sold some man engagement rings.

Some men buy their own engagement ring because they want other women to know they’re taken. It’s also a way to commemorate a relationship. Engagements often last around a year and the man-gagement ring is a way for women to let other women know he’s off the market.

Singer Jennifer Hudson is part of setting the trend. She spent ,000 on a ring for her boyfriend David Otunga. Still, not every future bride is following suite. A survey on brides.com showed that 45 percent of women said they would go along with the idea.
